Bernie Mac Refutes Death Reports, Remains in Hospital in Recovery
Bernie Mac remains in the hospital under treatment for pneumonia, refuting reports on Monday that the comedian is dead.
Mac, 50, is in critical condition in a Chicago hospital after going in last week. However, on Monday, several media outlets reported that Mac died.
His rep Danica Smith quickly responded to the reports that Mac did not die at all, stating that he was in the hospital. "Bernie Mac is still alive and being treated in a Chicago hospital for pneumonia and is expected to make a full recovery," Smith told People.com. "We once again ask that the press respect his privacy and that of his family."
In recent years, Mac, whose real name is Bernard Jeffery McCullough, has battled an inflammatory lung disease known as sarcoidosis which causes inflammation in the lungs, lymph nodes and other organs.
His sarcoidosis has been in remission since 2005. However, his pneumonia is not related to it, his rep said.
Prior to being placed in the hospital, Mac received a lot of attention due to his comedic remarks at a recent fundraiser for Barack Obama.
"I'm proud of him because politics is dirty, especially with Republicans," he said at the fundraiser. "People like rumors. They are going to say things like, you know, 'You was in the club with Lil' Kim and you and Kanye West got in a fist fight.' "
