The corruption trial involving South African leader Jacob Zuma has been delayed after a judge announced he would not rule on the merit of the case until next month.
Zuma, the leader of the African National Congress, is facing corruption, fraud, racketeering and money laundering charges related to an arms deal.
As leader of the ANC, Zuma is the frontrunner in the presidential elections scheduled to take place before July 2009. Zuma unseated current South African President Thabo Mbeki as the party’s leader last December.
Judge Chris Nicholson’s decision to push his decision back to September 12 has been criticized by Zuma’s defense team which has stated it would hamper their client’s chances of a fair trial.
The charges Zuma is facing are tied to an arms deal in 2005 while he was South Africa’s deputy president. While his financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, was found guilty Zuma’s case stalled and in 2006 prosecutors announced they were not ready to proceed.
Shortly after beating Mbeki for the ANC leadership Zuma was once again charged, leading many to believe the case was an attempt to prevent Zuma from becoming president.
