A Pakistani woman who had been held in Afghanistan after attempting to kill several U.S. agents has been transferred to New York where she is scheduled to appear in court to hear the charges leveled against her.
Aafia Siddiqui was apprehended in the Afghan province of Ghazni by local forces on July 17.After searching her bag police discovered documents related to bomb-making ad chemical weapons as well as information about U.S. landmarks.
The following day U.S. military and FBI agents arrived at the detention center to speak with Siddiqui but at one point she grabbed a weapon and began shooting at the officers. U.S. agents returned fire and hit her in the chest.
Siddiqui, an alleged al-Qaeda associate, had studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and returned to Pakistan in 2003 but quickly disappeared. According to U.S. officials she became associated with al-Qaeda and crossed over to Afghanistan but her family maintains the U.S. has been holding her in a detention center the past five years.
If Siddiqui is found guilty of attempted murder she could be facing 20 years in prison.
