Sergio Villarreal, believed to be the leader of the Beltran Leyva drug cartel, was captured in central Mexico on Sunday. Villarreal, also known as “El Grande,” and two accomplices were taken in to custody by marines in the state of Puebla. Authorities say Villarreal did not resist arrest. No other details were available.
Villarreal’s arrest comes about 2 weeks after the arrest of Edgar Valdez, aka “La Barbie.” Valdez and Villarreal were believed to be battling each other for control of the Beltran Leyva cartel, which was left without a leader after Arturo Beltran Leyva was killed in a shootout with Mexican authorities last year.
