Flooding in Chad Leaves 70,000 Homeless

Severe flooding in the African nation of Chad has left an estimated 70,000 people homeless. Recent heavy rains triggered the floods, which currently affect more than half of the country’s regions according to an official at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). At least 24 people died in the floods and 46 others died from an outbreak of cholera caused by the floods.

About 77,000 acres of crops have been destroyed. “The floods could exacerbate food insecurity for some households in areas where (floods) washed away crops and destroyed livelihoods," the OCHA office in Chad said in a statement.

Supplies and medical aid must be airlifted to the affected areas due to many roads being closed.
