A barge leaked 100 tons of diesel into the Nile River in southern Egypt on Saturday. According to reports, low water levels in Aswan caused the vessel, which is owned by the Nile Company for River Transportation, to tilt and leak the fuel.
The vessel was carrying 240 tons of diesel at the time of the incident. The remaining diesel was transferred to another ship.
"All necessary measures have been taken to keep the situation under control," said Aswan governor Mostafa El-Saed.
In an effort to keep drinking water from being polluted, authorities have blocked off water purification stations along the Nile. Officials have launched an investigation into the incident.
