Stocks Surge Higher on ISM Data and Fed Optimism

Stocks are posting a sizeable advance ahead of the Fed’s rate decision and policy statement later today as traders suspect the Committee may soften some of the hawkish inflation talk that came out of the June meeting, while a further pullback in crude oil and key raw materials is brightening the mood on the Street. A small rise in a major report on the service sector is also helping shares extend early gains.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones Industrial average rose 155.75 or 1.38 percent, to 11,439.90.

Broader indexes also rose. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 16.43, or 1.32 percent, to 1,265.44, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 26.82, or 1.17 percent, to 2,312.38.

Bonds were lower ahead of the Fed meeting. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its prices, stood at 3.99 percent from 3.97 percent late Monday.

The dollar traded mostly higher against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.

Light, sweet crude fell 75 cents to $120.66 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude has closed lower in six of the last nine sessions and is 18 percent off its all-time high above $147 reached July 11.

Monday’s Top Performing SmallCapVoice.com stocks:

GWS Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: GWSI) was a SmallCapVoice.com top performer for 8/4/08 moving up over 20% on trading volume of 262,120 shares.

GWSI shares continue to push higher on strong volume. Trading volume on Monday swelled to over 10X above the 30-day average.

GWS Technologies, Inc., an alternative energy company developing and marketing solar and wind-powered renewable energy products and solutions, today announced several additions to its microgeneration product line, including portable solar chargers such as IceTech’s Solar i9005, the Powermonkey-eXplorer, and Voltaic Systems’ Solar Backpacks.

Global investors poured $148 billion into renewable energy in 2007, fueling a trend the United Nations is calling a “green energy gold rush.” In a  report released July 1, 2008 by the U.N. Environmental Programme (UNEP), analysts conclude that investment in renewable energy rose 60% last year compared with 2006. While microgeneration is currently a small percentage of the entire renewable energy sector, one study predicts that microgeneration could supply 30% to 40% of the United Kingdom’s electricity by 2050.

The announcement last week by Billionaire investor T. Boone Pickens that he sold his entire stake in Yahoo, Inc. and now plans to make the U.S. "energy independent" by using wind power and natural gas powered vehicles has sparked investor interest in green energy stocks. Pickens is sinking billions of dollars into a new wind farm in Texas. It is likely to become the biggest in the world, producing enough power for the equivalent of 1.3 million homes.
