Rwandan Commission Accuses France of Playing Role in Genocide

A report published by an independent Rwandan commission has accused France of playing an active role in the genocide of 1994 that resulted in more than 800,000 deaths in the African country.

In the report the commission said French troops were directly responsible for the brutal slaughter of minority Tutsis and moderate Hutus during the 100 day campaign. The commission stated France knew of the preparations and even armed and trained the Hutu militants.

France has maintained they provided protection for civilians during the U.N. mission in Rwanda.

The report named 33 senior French military and political figures and indicated they should be prosecuted for their actions.
