Stocks Surge Higher as Fed Holds Interest Rates Steady

The U.S. Federal Reserve held a key interest rate steady on Tuesday in an effort to nurse the economy back to health without further exacerbating inflation.

The decision by the U.S. central bank leaves the benchmark federal funds rate target at a low 2 percent, where it has been since April. The Fed had reduced rates by a cumulative 3.25 percentage points since mid-September in response to a sharp housing retrenchment and turmoil in credit markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 259.56, or 2.30 percent, at 11,543.71.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 25.30, or 2.03 percent, to 1,274.31. And the Nasdaq composite index rose 3.91, or 1.92 percent, to 2,329.47.

In equity news, shares of GWS Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: GWSI) continue to push surge up over 22% on strong volume. Trading volume so far today is over 8X above the 30-day average.

Investors have shown a renewed appetite for alternative energy stocks after the announcement last week by Billionaire investor T. Boone Pickens that he sold his entire stake in Yahoo, Inc. and now plans to make the U.S. "energy independent" by using wind power and natural gas powered vehicles has sparked investor interest in green energy stocks. Pickens is sinking billions of dollars into a new wind farm in Texas. It is likely to become the biggest in the world, producing enough power for the equivalent of 1.3 million homes.

GWS Technologies, Inc. is an alternative energy company developing and marketing solar and wind-powered renewable energy products and solutions. The Company today announced several additions to its microgeneration product line, including portable solar chargers such as IceTech’s Solar i9005, the Powermonkey-eXplorer, and Voltaic Systems’ Solar Backpacks.

Global investors poured $148 billion into renewable energy in 2007, fueling a trend the United Nations is calling a “green energy gold rush.” In a  report released July 1, 2008 by the U.N. Environmental Programme (UNEP), analysts conclude that investment in renewable energy rose 60% last year compared with 2006. While microgeneration is currently a small percentage of the entire renewable energy sector, one study predicts that microgeneration could supply 30% to 40% of the United Kingdom’s electricity by 2050.
