Discovery of 125,000 Western Lowland Gorillas More Than Doubles Known Population

The discovery of about 125,000 Western lowland gorillas in the Republic of Congo has more than doubled the last estimated world total.

Found in a swamp area in the remote Lac Tele Community Reserve in northern Republic of Congo, researchers discovered a number of gorillas but based their estimated figure on gorilla nests found in the area.

The survey was carried out by the Wildlife Conservation Society during 2006 and 2007 with the figures being released on Tuesday.

According to reports the dense population only became known after a hunter tipped off researchers. After traveling three days by foot through the muddy swamp the researchers discovered the evidence that they had been hoping for.

Western lowland gorillas are listed as a critically endangered primate and are thought to be in sharp decline due to war, hunting, diseases and land loss. Tuesday’s announcement, while encouraging, won’t take the gorilla off the list.

Instead, there is already a push by wildlife agencies to work with the Republic of Congo government to ensure the safety of the primates.
