Police officers, educators cite alcohol and marijuana as most serious problems for teens

Alcohol and marijuana tops most serious drug problems for teens

The Center for Medicine in the Public Interest released its findings on a national Teen Substance Abuse Survey distributed among local police officers and high school teachers regarding teen drug abuse. While over-the-counter drug abuse has recently been touted as a serious growing problem among youth, those closest to adolescents disagree.

CMPI’s statistics indicate that those surveyed believe that alcohol and marijuana are the most serious drugs that are being used by teenagers.

“Those who are intimately involved with our youth seem to agree with what history has proven thus far,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Historical data has shown us that marijuana and alcohol are the most abused substances among youth. Certainly that doesn’t mean that there aren’t other substances which pose a risk to this group, but statistically speaking, alcohol and marijuana hves caused the most problems among teenagers. The issue with these two substances is that their use can lead to the experimentation and subsequent abuse of more potent, illicit drugs such as heroin. They are certainly known to be gateway drugs to substances far more dangerous.”

By a margin of 2-to-1, educators and law enforcement officials advocate education of middle and high school aged children on the dangers posed by over-the-counter products such as cough medicines and other substances.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center supports all community based efforts focused on educating the youth of America about the dangers of all types of substances which can be potentially abused.
