Coup in Mauritania, President and Prime Minister Held

A military coup has overthrown the government of Mauritania and the aggressors have already set up a state council designed to run the northwest African country.

During the coup President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi and Prime Minister Yahia Ould Ahmed El-Ouakef were held captive, there has been no word on their condition.

The coup was launched shortly after the president dismissed several senior army officers, including the head of the presidential guard, Gen. Ould Abdelaziz. Following the coup Abdelaziz was announced as the country’s new president.

In 2007 Mauritania held free and fair elections at which time Abdallahi was elected president but his recent decision to dismiss the government and replace it with an ineffective government brought massive protests.
