Steven Curtis Chapman Discusses Daughter's Tragedy on "Good Morning America"

Steven Curtis Chapman, the famed Christian music star, spoke about his recent family tragedy on ABC's "Good Morning America" for the first time on Wednesday.

Steven was accompanied by his wife Mary Sue and their children Emily, Caleb and Will on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday morning.

On May 5, Maria Sue Chapman, Steven's five-year old daughter, was accidentally hit by a car as her 17-year old brother backed out of the driveway in an SUV.

The Chapman family was at their Tennessee home as they celebrated the engagement of their daughter and the high school graduation of their son.

Maria Sue Chapman was playing with several other children in the driveway when her brother drove a Toyota Land Cruiser down the driveway. She later died at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

Maria, who was adopted from China, was the Chapmans' youngest daughter. Steven and his wife, Mary Beth, adopted three daughters from China as part of a ministry called Shaohannah’s Hope, named after the Chapman's first adopted daughter Shaohannah. The couple also has three biological children. 

"We have talked a lot, and you will hear all of us talk about the process of grieving with hope," Chapman told GMA anchor Robin Roberts. "That's what has kept us breathing, kept us alive, is that while we are grieving this process, there is a hope that we have that we're anchored to in the midst of just what sometimes seems unbearable."

Chapman is one of the most successful Christian musicians of all time, having won five Grammy Awards and sold over 10 million records. Just months before the tragedy, he published a book about fatherhood called "Cinderella: The Love of a Daddy and His Princess".
