Zimbabwe’s rival ZANU-PF and Movement for Democratic Change parties have issued a joint statement calling for the end to post-election violence that has devastated the country.
Both sides have been meeting in South Africa to discuss a possible power-sharing agreement following the controversial elections that ended in June. Robert Mugabe retained his position as position as president after MDC opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai dropped out of the race with less than a week before the vote.
Tsvangirai had said the election was not free and fair and that Mugabe had used violence against MDC supporters to intimidate voters.
Mugabe has denied those charges yet the international community has sided with Tsvangirai and many countries have adopted new sanctions that deal directly with Mugabe and those close to the president.
Last month both sides agreed to send representatives to South Africa to meet with Thabo Mbeki to work out an agreement. Those talks have gone past their scheduled two-week deadline but no agreement has been made.
