Stocks Are Lower on Freddie Mac Report
Cisco Systems is underpinning techs following upbeat profits, and energy and materials companies are rebounding. But the rest of the market is falling after Freddie Mac recorded a big loss and will cut its dividend, putting housing and credit woes back into the spotlight.
In midmorning trading, the Dow fell 69.45, or 0.60 percent, to 11,546.32.
Broader stock indicators also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 6.56, or 0.51 percent, to 1,278.32, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 10.50, or 0.45 percent, to 2,339.33.
Bonds fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 4.05 percent from 4.02 percent late Tuesday. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices rose.
Investors are also watching crude oil after prices fell sharply in the last two sessions. Light, sweet crude fell 25 cents to $118.92 on the New York Mercantile Exchange after the government reported a jump in domestic investories.
