Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf Facing Impeachment

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is facing the prospect of being impeached as the country’s ruling coalition parties have announced plans to move forward with proceedings to remove the leader from his position.

Pakistan People’s Party leader Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif announcement the decision to proceed with impeachment hearings at a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday.

Musharraf took power in a bloodless coup in 1999 at which time he was leader of the country’s army. He let go of his control of the army last year after internal pressure but that has done little to stop him from carrying out his personal agenda as president.

Prior to impeachment proceeding, Musharraf would face a vote of confidence in the national and provincial assemblies. If a 50 percent majority is secured then Musharraf must be given notice that the impeachment process will be moving forward at which time he will have three days to respond.

The Senate and Assembly will then proceed to investigate the charges and if the impeachment were to go to a vote a two-thirds majority would be needed to remove Musharraf.

Musharraf has said in the past he would resign before he ever underwent impeachment proceedings. He does have one trump card in which he can dissolve parliament and place the country under emergency rule.

That scenario would likely cause chaos.
