Demonstrations in Mauritania Follow Coup

Police in the Mauritania’s capital city Nouakchott have broken up a protest involving hundreds of people voicing their objection to the country’s recent coup led by General Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz.

Those protests followed a demonstration by thousands of supporters of the new leader.

Abdelaziz unseated the country’s first democratically elected president, Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi on Wednesday. Abdallahi, along with Prime Minister Yahia Ould Ahmed El-Ouakef were detained by soldiers following an attempt to dismiss four senior army officers. Abdelaziz, as head of the national guard, was among those four set to be dismissed.

The African Union has called for the immediate release of the leaders.

According to the coup leaders Mauritania would hold free and transparent elections as soon as possible.

Mauritania gained its independence from France in 1960 and has experienced numerous coups over the years, almost all involving the country’s military.
