Stocks Are Lower on Weak Jobs Report
Wall Street retreated Thursday after weekly unemployment claims jumped to a six-year high and retailers generally reported disappointing monthly sales. But a surprise increase in pending home sales appeared to mitigate some of the looses, leaving the Dow Jones industrial average down about 100 points.
In midmorning trading, the Dow fell 111.14, or 0.95 percent, to 11,544.93 after being down more than 165 points in the early going. The blue chips had risen more than 370 points the previous two sessions.
Broader indicators also fell. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 9.57, or 0.74 percent, to 1,279.62, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 8.05, or 0.34 percent, to 2,370.32.
Oil prices that fell sharply earlier in the week rebounded Thursday, likely adding to Wall Street's downbeat mood. Light, sweet crude rose $1.46 to $120.04 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Bonds rose as investors sought the protection of government debt. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its prices, fell to 4.01 percent from 4.05 percent late Wednesday.
The dollar was lower against other major currencies, while gold prices rose.
