Syrian authorities have released Aref Dalila after the economist served nearly seven years in prison after being labeled a dissident for encouraging a rebellion and spreading false information.
Dalila was jailed in 2002 following his call for freedom of expression and the end to government monopolies.
Following the death of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad in 2000 the country underwent a brief period of political openness dubbed Damascus Spring. During this period Syrians were known to have political discussions inside private homes where ideas were exchanged but by 2001 Bashar al-Assad, successor to his father, clamped down on the freedoms and within a year Dalila was jailed.
Originally sentenced to ten years, Dalila was the subject of many human rights group’s efforts who worked for his freedom. In July the National Organization for Human Rights in Syria appealed to al-Assad to pardon Dalila, citing the 68-year-old’s deteriorating health.
