Everything was happening in super slow-motion now, as if time almost stood still. I had gone from an all out sprint to a dead stop in nearly total darkness.
My heart pounded in my ears as I tried to hold my breath and stay motionless. There I stood face to face, about three feet away from this... creature, the likes of which I had never seen, but only read about in dusty books of folklore and heard the vague descriptions in the tall tales shared by the codgers that hang out down at the old community general store.
Never in my wildest dreams could I ever have imagined I'd find myself in this life-threatening situation, not right here in my own back yard, on this picture perfect autumn evening. A thousand thoughts raced through my mind and the cliche' became reality for me: my whole life actually did flash before my eyes.
Glimpses of my parents, my wife and kids, my grandkids... I wasn't ready for death, I'm only 49 for God's sake, there is so much life left to live, so much I want to do but haven't yet, so many things... I need to take care of but haven't yet...
