Rescuers successfully completed a bore hole to reach 33 miners trapped in a mine in northern Chile on Friday. The hole reaches 2,040 feet down into the mine’s workshop. Workers will now concentrate on making the hole wide enough to haul the miners out. If the additional drilling goes well, the miners could be rescued by late October to early November.
The San Esteban mine, which is located in the Atacama region, collapsed on August 5. The miners made contact with rescuers on August 22 by tying a hand-written message to a probe authorities lowered in to the mine. The message was written in Spanish and said, “We are fine in the shelter, the 33 of us. Drilling to free them began August 30.
