Russian Forces Clash with Georgian Troops in South Ossetia, State of War Nears

A declaration of war appears imminent as Russia and Georgian forces have engaged in intense fighting in the separatist region of South Ossetia.

Four Russian planes have reportedly been shot down and Russian military officials are saying ten “peacekeepers” have been killed in the fighting.

According to Georgian military officials Russian jets attacked an airport near the capital city of Tbilisi and the country responded by downing at least two of those jets. Fighting quickly broke out in South Ossetia, a separatist region that has been operating under de facto independence since the 1990s.

South Ossetia has a large Russian population and President Dmitry Medvedev told Interfax “I must protect the life and dignity of Russian citizens wherever they are.”

Moscow has claimed that the ten “peacekeepers” were killed by Georgian forces in South Ossetia and at least15 civilians were dead. Medvedev vowed to avenge those deaths saying, “We will not allow their deaths to go unpunished. Those responsible will receive a deserved punishment.”

After his election in 2004 Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili vowed to recover lost territories, among those territories, South Ossetia.
