Steven Curtis Chapman: We Grieve for Maria With Hope

Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman and his family have opened up about the death of Maria Sue Chapman in their first interview since the accident that killed her. The 5-year-old died May 21 after being hit by an SUV driven by her older brother Will Franklin Chapman.

Maria Sue was playing with several other children in the driveway of her family’s Williamson County home when Will Franklin drove a Toyota Land Cruiser down the driveway and accidentally hit his adopted sister. The child was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“We have talked a lot. And you will hear all of us talk about the process of grieving with hope,” Chapman said in an interview with Good Morning America. “That’s what has kept us breathing, kept us alive is that while we are grieving this process, there is a hope that we have that we’re anchored to in the midst of just what sometimes seems unbearable.”

Chapman’s wife Mary Beth Chapman said she has had a hard time dealing with the loss of her daughter. “I’ve said, you know, somewhat coldly, ‘I don't care whose lives are touched by this story and whose lives are changed or what good comes of it.' As the heart of a mom, I want Maria back.’ And that's -- you know, that's what I want people to know is I want Maria back. But because I know that she is completely whole because of my faith, I know that she's completely whole and completely OK and I'm going to see her again. As a mom, I have to shift that grief to go,” she said.

Because of his faith in God, Chapman added, “I’m going to dance with Maria again.”

The Chapmans have three biological children and three adopted Chinese children. Maria Sue was their youngest child.
