Georgia Adds 1,000 Soldiers for Russia Conflict Over South Ossetia

The Republic of Georgia announced Friday that it will withdraw 1,000 soldiers from Iraq to redirect them in their conflict with Russia over the South Ossetia region.

Georgia, a country that was formerly of the U.S.S.R., launched an offensive strike on Russia on Friday, prompting Russian tanks to invade Georgia's South Ossetia region.

Georgia launched the strike in their attempts to reclaim the rebel South Ossetia region, which lies in Georgia's territory. The attack killed at least three Russian peacekeepers and 15 civilians.

Russian troops invaded the country of Georgia, bombing a military airbase outside of the South Ossetia capital of Tbilisi. No one was injured in the strikes at the Vaziani military base, which is about 15 miles outside of Tbilisi.

According to Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili, 150 Russian tanks and armoured vehicles entered the region, and Georgian forces claim to have shot down two Russian warplanes over the territory.

The South Ossetia region claimed their independence from Georgia in the 1990s, but it was not official. Its independence has not been diplomatically recognized by any United Nations member-state, which continues to regard South Ossetia as part of Georgia.
