Thabo Mbeki to Travel to Zimbabwe to Continue Talks with ZANU-PF and MDC Leaders

South African President Thabo Mbeki is scheduled to travel to Harare, Zimbabwe where he will meet with ZANU-PF and MDC leaders in hopes of solidifying a power-sharing agreement between the two political parties.

According to South African newspapers a power-sharing deal is near which would place Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai in the role of Prime Minister while ZANU-PF leader Robert Mugabe would remain President.

Tsvangirai had won the first round of the presidential elections in March but officials declared he did not secure a large enough majority to avoid a run-off. During the period leading up to the June vote Tsvangirai claimed Mugabe used military forces to kill and intimidate MDC supporters. With less than a week before the vote Tsvangirai dropped out of the race and Mugabe ran unopposed.

Since that date Mugabe and his party have faced international condemnation and been the subject of new sanctions.

Last month ZANU-PF and MDC leaders agreed to travel to South Africa to try and work out a deal that would end the violence and bring about a power-sharing agreement. Those talks were scheduled to end on Monday but both sides agreed to extend the deadline to work out a deal.

Mbeki is expected to moderate the talks in Harare over the weekend.
