South Ossetia Estimates 1,400 Dead as Russian Forces Enter Capital City of Tskhinvali

An estimated 1,400 people have been killed in a brutal battle involving the separatist region of South Ossetia as Russian forces have engaged in direct battle with Georgian forces over the breakaway territory.

Fighting began on Thursday as Georgian troops moved into South Ossetia to reclaim the region which has been operating under de facto independence since 1992. As part of his campaign promise, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili vowed to bring back lost territories yet Russia has maintained there are Russian citizens in South Ossetia and any attack on them would be met with a strong response.

By Friday the intensity level of Friday skyrocketed as Georgian forces claimed to have downed four Russian jets in response to the Russian air raids that destroyed Georgian military bases and towns. Russia has denied those air raids.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said his country’s move into Tskhinvali was one of duty to protect Russian citizens. He also vowed to avenge the reported death of ten “peacekeepers” killed in the region. Medvedev was quoted as saying, “Those responsible will receive a deserved punishment."

In response to the surge in violence Saakashvili recalled 1,000 troops from Iraq and called them into action against Russia.

Several countries have called for an immediate cease-fire yet air strikes and explosions continued to ravage South Ossetia through Friday.
