Pirates Release Two German Hostages after $1 Million Ransom Paid

A pair of Germans held captive by pirates for five weeks were released on Saturday after a ransom of $1 million was reportedly paid.

The two Germans had been sailing through the Gulf of Aden when they were nabbed by the pirates off the Somalia coast. After the pirates ransacked the yacht they transported the German man and woman to the semi-autonomous region of Puntland where they were held until their release.

Pirates often target boats that pass through the waters off the coast of Somalia, holding hostages as a means of securing large ransoms. The Somali coast is considered one of the most dangerous routes in the world for fishermen, cargo ships and yachts.
