Michael Phelps grabbed his first gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a world-record setting time of 4 minutes, 3.84 seconds in the 400-meter IM on Sunday.
Phelps came over to China with his eyes on nabbing eight gold medals, which would eclipse the record seven gold medals won by Mark Spitz, a number many thought unbreakable.
On Sunday Phelps touched the wall ahead of Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh who finished at 4:06.16 for silver while Ryan Lochte claimed bronze for the U.S. with a time of 4:08.09.
