Georgia Calls for Ceasefire in Conflict over South Ossetia

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has reportedly called on his troops to cease firing at Russian troops and is actively trying to hold talks with the Russians to end the conflict over South Ossetia. 

While Georgia has stopped firing at Russian troops Moscow has continued to bomb targets inside Georgia, including the country’s main airport near the capital city of Tbilisi and military bases in the area.

Meanwhile Georgian troops pulled out of South Ossetia’s capital of Tskhinvali as Russian forces moved in to take control.

In a statement released by the Georgia’s foreign ministry the push for peace was obvious stating Georgia, “stopped firing in the South Ossetian conflict zone and is ready to begin talks with Russia on a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities.”

Russia has said that the statement has yet to be verified and have continued to push the offensive against Georgia.

The conflict began late Thursday night as Georgia moved troops into South Ossetia to reclaim control of the breakaway territory. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev responded quickly saying there were Russian citizens in South Ossetia and he had an obligation to protect those individuals. Medvedev then authorized airstrikes against Georgian troops in the region.

Reports have indicated that up to 1,500 civilians in South Ossetia have been killed in the fighting.
