Isaac Hayes, Soul Icon and Legendary Showman, Dies at 65

Isaac Hayes, the deep-voiced soul icon known for his Oscar-award winning theme song from the cult classic “Shaft,” has died. Hayes was 65.

The cause of death has not been announced. According to reports, Hayes’ wife called police shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday after finding him unconscious in their Memphis, Tennessee home. Hayes had suffered a stroke in 2006.

Hayes collected a pair of Grammys for the theme to “Shaft” after the song hit number in 1971.

Hayes carried his smooth baritone voice into television later in his career and earned more fame as the voice of Chef from “South Park.” After a long stretch with the show he quit following an episode that mocked Scientology, a religious belief which he held.
