Police Fire on Kashmir Protesters, at least Two Dead

Police attempting to disperse a large crowd of Muslim protesters fired shots that killed at last two and sent thousands scurrying for cover.

The protesters were marching in support of fruit growers who have been unable to carry their produce over the de facto border in the troubled Kashmir region. Protesters and police clashed in Srinagar as the march moved toward the Line of Control, an area that divides the region between India and Pakistan.

Kashmir has long been a source of trouble for India and Pakistan with India’s only claim to the region being the Hindu-majority Jammu area, a territory both sides claim.
