2008 Beijing Olympics Results: China, U.S. Lead Medal Count on Monday

China and the United States lead the medal count in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, according to reports Monday.

China has won nine gold medals, three silver medals and four bronze medals, giving them a medal count of 14. The U.S. has three gold medals, four silver medals and five bronze medals, giving them 12 medals altogether.

China won two gold medals in synchronized diving: Tian Liang and Jinghui Yang (10m platform) and Guo Jingjing and Wu Minxia (3m springboard). The host nation won four weightlifting gold medals: Long Qingquan (men's 56kg), Zhang Xiangxiang (men's 62kg), Chen Xiexia (women's 48kg) and Chen Yanqing (women's 58kg).

China also won a gold in judo (Xian Dongmei, 52kg) and two in air pistol shooting: Pang Wei (men's 10m) and Guo Wenjun (women's 10m). Guo Wenjun, Chen Xiexia and Chen Yanqing all set Olympic records.

Michael Phelps has won two gold medals thus far as he is on pace to break the Olympic record for eight golds in a single Olympics, breaking Mark Spitz's record from the 1972 Olympics. Phelps set two world records and Olympic records on his road to gold, winning the 400m Individual Medley (4:03.84) and 4x100 Freestyle Relay (3:08.24).

Phelps won the exhilarating 4x100 Freestyle Relay, along with Cullen Jones, Garrett Weber-Gale and anchor Jason Lesak.

Mariel Zagunis won the U.S.' third gold medal in the women's individual sabre for fencing. Sada Jacobson and Becca Ward swept the women's individual sabre, winning silver and bronze, respectively.

South Korea has won four gold medals and four silver medals, while Italy has won three gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals. Both nations have a medal count of eight.
