South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki continues to mediate talks between Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF and opposition Movement for Democratic Change parties in hopes the two sides can come to an agreement that will end post election violence and resolve the controversial outcome of the vote.
Mbeki has been in Zimbabwe’s capital city of Harare where he has met with President Robert Mugabe, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara, leader of a smaller MDC faction.
Mugabe won Zimbabwe’s presidential election in June after Tsvangirai dropped out of the race with less than a week before the vote. Tsvangirai accused Mugabe of using violence to intimidate opposition supporters and claimed the election had not been free and fair.
Tsvangirai won the first round of the election but officials claimed he did not secure a large enough majority to avoid a run-off.
Following Mugabe’s victory several international leaders called for sanctions targeting the president and his supporters. Mbeki has been working to bring about a power-sharing agreement and recent talks have centered on making Mugabe a ceremonial president while Tsvangirai would become executive prime minister.
