Russian Forces Push into Georgia Through Abkhazia, Fighting in South Ossetia Continues

Russian forces have continued to move troops against Georgian troops, using the breakaway region of Abkhazia to push forward into the town of Senaki in Georgia.

As Russian troops and tanks entered Georgia fighting continued to rage in the breakaway region of South Ossetia where the conflict began late Thursday night.

South Ossetia has been operating under de facto independence since fighting ended with Georgia in 1992. They have been looking to gain independence, a move that Russia supports, yet Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has vowed to bring together all lost territories.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev called Georgia’s assault on South Ossetia an aggressive act against Russian citizens and would be met with military action.

Saakashvili had signed an EU-backed ceasefire agreement yet Moscow has rejected the proposal.
