Mauritania Coup Leaders Release Prime Minister, Three Other Government Officials

The leaders of last week’s coup in Mauritania have released Prime Minister Yahia Ould Ahmed El-Ouakef as well as three other high-ranking government officials but have yet to release President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.

General Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz led the coup against Abdallahi after the president got rid of four senior military officials, on being the general himself. While Abdallahi had been the first democratically elected president in Mauritania, General Abdelaziz argued that he had been moving the country further away from democracy.

Abdelaziz has said the country would hold transparent elections in the future, a move many western countries have called unacceptable.
