Prosecutors to Seek Death Penalty in Case of Eve Carson, Murdered UNC Coed

Prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty in the case of slain University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson, putting 22-year-old Demario James Atwater in jeopardy of becoming the first man sentenced to die in Orange County since NC resumed executions in 1984.

Atwater, along with Laurence Alvin Lovette, 17, have been charged with the brutal first-degree murder of Carson. The 22-year-old Carson was found shot to death on March 5, her body lying in a residential street not far from campus.

On Monday District Attorney Jim Woodall told the judge in the case that he would be seeking the death penalty against Atwater.

Because of Lovette’s age, prosecutors can’t seek the death penalty against him.
