Gunman Killed, Sheriff’s Deputy Injured in Standoff Near Georgia Elementary School

A gunman involved in a standoff with police was shot and killed Monday after he opened fire on the Hall County, Georgia officers.

The standoff followed a call to police reporting a man carrying a large handgun who was walking in close proximity to an elementary school, Lula Elementary School. An off-duty officer spotted the gunman and approached the man but the man pointed his gun at the officer and then ran to his trailer home.

After negotiations failed to bring the man out of his home officers fired tear gas at which point the man opened fire on the authorities, striking a sheriff’s deputy. Police returned fire and killed the man.

The sheriff’s deputy was transported by medical helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.
