1 Mind Ministries Cult Member Ria Ramkissoon Charged in Sons Death

A mother and three members of a cult that she was a part of have been arrested and charged in her toddler’s starving death. The remains of 15-month-old Javon Thompson were found in a suitcase inside a shed at a Philadelphia home.

Authorities say the child’s mother Rai Ramkissoon  and three members of the religious cult 1 Mind Ministries starved Javon in December 2006 because he wouldn’t say “amen” after meals. Ramkissoon did not seek medical care for the boy when he stopped breathing. He died in her arms.

An informant told police that cult members thought Javon was a “demon.” A female cult member identified as Queen Antoinette left Javon’s body in a room for more than a week convinced that “God was going to raise Javon from the dead.” She then put the child’s body in a suitcase and would occasionally spray it with disinfectant to cover the odor.

1 Mind Ministries moved from Philadelphia in early 2007 and relocated to Brooklyn, New York. The suitcase containing Javon’s body was left inside a shed at man’s home who they befriended while living there. Authorities found the suitcase in April.

Ramkissoon, 21, was charged Sunday with first-degree murder. She is being held in the psychiatric ward of Baltimore’s Central Booking and Intake Center.

Ramkissoon’s family says she shouldn’t be charged in her son’s death. “She had no control over that situation at all,” says her stepfather Craig Newton.

Her mother Seeta Khadan Newton insists that Ramkissoon was a victim of the cult. “My daughter was a victim, just like my grandson. Somebody made that decision to not feed that child, and my daughter had to follow instructions,” Newton said.

Antoinette, 40, Marcus Cobbs, 21, and Trevia Williams, 21, are also charged in the toddler’s death.
