Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an end to his country’s military strikes inside neighboring Georgia, saying Russian citizens and peacekeepers inside South Ossetia were now safe.
Despite the call to end the military offensive, Georgian officials are saying Russia has continued their air strikes on the town of Gori, just 50 miles from the capital city of Tbilisi.
Russia has been criticized by the international community for pushing their offensive into areas far from South Ossetia, the breakaway region they claim to be defending.
Reports on Tuesday indicated that several people were killed in Gori when Russia bombed a hospital just moments before Medvedev announced the ceasefire.
As Medvedev announced the end to the offensive Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili warned citizens that Russia could not be trusted to stop their assault on the country, calling their actions “ruthless, heartless destruction.”
In Medvedev’s announcement the new President noted, “I've decided to finish the operation to force the Georgian authorities to peace. The safety of our peacekeeping forces and civilian population has been restored.” He continued, “The aggressor has been punished, having sustained considerable losses. Its armed forces have been disorganized.”
