Mark David Chapman Denied Parole for Fifth Time

The man responsible for the murder of music legend John Lennon has been denied parole for the fifth time Tuesday. Mark David Chapman, who is serving 20 years to life in prison for the shooting death of Lennon in 1980, requested parole but was denied “due to concern for the public safety and welfare,” according to a statement from the New York State Division of Parole.

Chapman, 53, shot Lennon to death outside the former Beatle singers New York City apartment on December 8, 1980. He has served 24 years in prison at Attica Correctional Facility. He was turned down for parole in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006. Chapman can apply for parole next in 2010.

Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono has previously submitted letters requesting that Chapman be denied parole.
