U.S. President George Bush has announced plans to deliver humanitarian aid to Georgia and urged Russia to “honor its commitment to allow in all forms of humanitarian assistance.”
Speaking in Washington on Wednesday morning Bush revealed plans to use the US military to deliver the humanitarian aid. That aid will be carried by aircraft and naval vessels.
Bush also called on Russia to respect the ceasefire that had been agreed upon on Tuesday. According to several reports Russia continued to launch offensive assaults within Georgia just moments after the country’s president, Dmitry Medvedev, announced the end of their “operation.”
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is expected to fly to France to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy before heading to the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi where she will meet with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.
The conflict between Georgia and Russia broke late Thursday night after Georgian troops marched into South Ossetia to reclaim the breakaway region. Russia called the move an act of aggression on Russian citizens and quickly mobilized their military and launched air strikes.
