U.S. and Libya to Renew Diplomatic Relations Following Signing of Compensation Deal

The stage has been set for the United States and Libya to renew diplomatic relations after both sides signed a deal that would compensate victims affected by bombings carried out by each country.

 

After victims of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 and the 1986 Berlin disco bombing are compensated by Libya and victims of the 1986 airstrikes in Tripoli and Benghazi are compensated by the United States both sides will move forward with diplomatic relations.

 

The Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland killed all 270 people on board while the bombing in Berlin killed three and injured more than 200. Libya has claimed at last 40 were killed when the U.S. bombed its cities in 1986.

 

Both sides met in Tripoli on Thursday and agreed to a deal that would pave the way for a lasting relationship that could include embassies.
