Passports Returned to MDC Leaders, Tsvangirai to Travel to South Africa

After having their passports confiscated by authorities at the Harare airport earlier in the day all three Movement for Democratic Change leaders were returned their travel documents and will now continue on to South Africa to meet with President Thabo Mbeki.

MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his two colleagues arrived at the airport on Thursday with plans to travel to Johannesburg were they were to meet with Mbeki. After their documents were confiscated MDC General Secretary Tendai Biti blamed the incident on Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and the ruling ZANU-PF party.

Biti expressed his belief that Mugabe as trying to prevent the MDC from attending a regional summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) scheduled for this weekend in Johannesburg.

Mbeki has been mediating talks between ZANU-PF and MDC leaders since Zimababe’s violent elections culminated in late June. Mugabe, who has held the presidential seat since the country’s independence in 1980, beat Tsvangirai in a run-off after the MDC leader dropped out of the race less than a week before the vote.

Tsvangirai had won the initial election in March but officials declared he had not secured a large enough majority to avoid a run-off. Tsvangirai claimed Mugabe had used violence to intimidate MDC supporters and has alleged that several hundred were killed and more than 150,000 forced to flee.

Initial talks between the two sides took place last month in South Africa and were resumed in Harare last weekend but neither side has been able to agree on a deal.
