Ray Tye Saves Iraqi Boy with Massive Tumor

Liquor tycoon Ray Tye helped save a 2-year-old Iraqi boy’s life by paying for a 12-pound tumor to be removed from his body. Safa was diagnosed with a Wilm’s tumor, the most common type of kidney tumor.  He had received chemotherapy in Baghdad for a year but the tumor kept growing.

“You know, he is my first baby. I used everything I have to rescue my baby. I tried to do something, but I can’t,” the baby’s father Mohammed told CNN.

Tye discovered Safa and his charity Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation paid to the operation to remove the tumor. Tye and his wife Eileen formed the foundation in 2003 after their son died of multiple myeloma.

“The mission is to bring people to hospitals who have life-threatening problems and don’t have money. I don’t care where they come from,” Tye said.

Safa, his father, and his mother Manal travelled to Jordon to the King Hussein Cancer Center where Dr. Iyad Sultan was set to perform the surgery and warned the couple that their son may not survive. “There is a real chance that Safa’s may die during the operation,” Sultan said. "We don't know what will happen when we open Safa'a's abdomen, and we take this tumor out. Safa'a has a chance of survival definitely, if he survives today. So today is the most critical day in Safa'a's life."

Safa was in surgery for 5 hours but doctors say the operation was a success. The tumor was completely removed. “I cannot put my happiness into words,” Manal said.

“I will tell you the truth. Tears come to your eyes. You’re saving a life,” Tye, 85, said of Safa. “When you look at somebody that had a life-threatening problem and you could, with money, save that life, you’ve got to sit back and say you helped make this world just a little better, and that’s what it’s all about.”
