2008 Beijing Olympics Results: U.S. Women's Basketball Team Defeats Spain, 90-55

The U.S. women's basketball team defeated Spain, 93-55, after a slow start at 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

After just leading 39-34 at halftime, the U.S. team outscored Spain by 20 points in the fourth quarter to blow out the Spanish national team.

Tina Thompson scored nine of her 17 points during an important third quarter run and Lisa Leslie added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the USA team. Leslie had an injury scare in the third quarter, but returned after a brief stretching exercise.

The Americans had a tournament-record 19 turnovers in the game with 11 of them coming in the first half. Candace Parker added 13 points and Diana Taurasi had 12 for the U.S. (4-0).

Amaya Valdemoro scored 17 points to lead Spain (2-2), who will finish its pool play on Sunday against Mali.

With the win, the U.S. has 29 straight victories in Olympic contests. The last loss was to the Unified team in the 1992 semifinals.

In other games Friday, Hana Machova had 23 points to pace the Czech Republic to a 90-59 win over New Zealand, and Miao Lijie poured in 25 points in China's 69-48 win over Mali.

Lauren Jackson had 30 points in Australia's 96-73 blowout of Latvia in Group A play, while Russia earned a 74-64 triumph over Brazil.
