The United States women’s soccer team has advanced to the semifinals and assured themselves of a spot in the medal round after Natasha Kai scored the go-ahead goal with a header in overtime to lift the Americans to a 2-1 victory over Canada on Friday.
Angela Hucles gave the Americans an early lead after scoring from close range in the 12th minute but Canada’s Christine Sinclair equalized 18 minutes later with a blast past U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo.
The match was then delayed for more than 1 hour, 30 minutes after heavy rain and lightning sent both sides off the field.
After a scoreless second 45 minutes the match went into overtime where Kai took a beautiful cross and headed in the winner.
