2008 Olympic Games Results: Tyson Gay Advances in 100-Meter Track Heat

Tyson Gay advances to final 16 after in the 100-meters heat on Thursday in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Gay, the defending world champion, finished his quarterfinal race in 10.09 seconds, second behind NCAA champion Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago, to advance easily to the final 16. Doc Patton and Walter Dix also advanced to the top 16 for the U.S. team.

World record-holder Usain Bolt and fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell both advanced to the top 16, continuing the hope of a potential dream final matching the three men with the eight fastest times in history.

Gay returned to track after missing six weeks for a fall during the Olympic trials, which caused him to be carried out on a stretcher.

Bernard Lagat, Leo Manzano and U.S. team flagbearer Lopez Lomong also advanced in the 1500-meters.
