2008 Olympic Games Results: USA Baseball Team Loses to Cuba in Extra Innings

The U.S. baseball team lost to reigning Olympic champion Cuba, 5-4, in 11 innings in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The game ended in regulation, 3-3.

USA's Jayson Nix began the 11th inning by fouling a ball off of his left eye, forcing him to leave the game for the hospital. He is likely done for the remainder of the Olympic Games.

Nix was bleeding badly after the injury and had a lot of swelling, according to Team USA coach Davey Johnson, who accused the Cubans and pitcher Pedro Lazo of purposely going at Nix's head.

Cuba's Michel Enriquez hit a go-ahead two-run single in the 11th. Lazo pitched six innings of relief for the win.

International baseball's new extra-innings rule was used for the first time Friday. Beginning in the 11th inning, runners go to first and second to start the inning and teams can start at any point in their batting order.

The Cuban national team is now 3-0 and is in good contention for the gold medal again, while the 1-2 USA team is struggling to qualify for a medal round.
