A top FARC commander wanted in the United States was killed in Colombia over the weekend. Colombia’s National Police announced Monday that Sixto Antonio Cabana Guillen died Sunday when the military bombed a rebel camp in a jungle area near the border of Ecuador.
Guillen was one of 50 high-ranking FARC leaders on the U.S. State Department’s wanted list. The U.S. government was offering a $2.5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. He was accused of helping control the distribution of cocaine in the U.S. and other countries.
At least 27 members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were killed in Sunday’s bombing. The camp was located in a jungle area near San Miguel, Putumayo.
The airstrike comes weeks after nearly 50 policeman and soldiers were killed in various attacks carried out by members of FARC. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said the airstrike was "the biggest blow in recent times" to the rebel group.
