Michael Phelps capped off the most successful Olympic showing in history with his eighth gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Sunday after the United States won the men’s 4 x 100 medley relay in Olympic and world record time.
Phelps, Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak powered their way to a 3:29.34 for the historic gold, touching the wall just ahead of the Australian team of Eamon Sullivan, Andrew Lauterstein, Brenton Rickard, and Hayden Stoeckel who finished in 3:30.04 for the silver medal.
Japan, made up of Kosuke Kitajima, Hisayoshi Sato, Takuro Fujii and Junichi Miyashita, finished in 3:31.18 for the bronze medal.
With the victory Phelps snapped the former record of seven gold medals won at a single Olympics achieved by U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz in 1972.
